Holidays are on the horizon, but what are we going to do about our new plant babies we have been collecting throughout lockdown? They have been there throughout, adding some life to our homes & giving us a focus when we needed it most. But the beach is calling & that road trip won’t drive itself, so here are some tips that can help keep your plants alive whilst you escape for a couple of weeks.

  1. Give them a good water before you leave.

Whilst there are loads of things to do before you go away (dust off that passport & by some in-date suntan lotion), ensuring you water your plants at the very last opportunity will mean you can leave in the knowledge they have definitely had a good drink.

  2. Bunch your plants together.

If your plants are spaced all over your home, bringing them together in a group helps create a mini climate that will retain moisture for longer. Perfect #PlantGang

  3. Create a humid environment with pebble trays.

Similar to the above point, if you also add pebble trays to place your plants on, then this will add to the humidity in the room meaning they will not need watering quite as quickly as normal. To create a pebble tray, simply use a large saucer, add some pebbles & then add water to that!

Note: Make sure the roots aren’t likely to touch the water, which could result in root rot.

  4. Ensure they are not in the full sun, keeping it a little shadier than normal.

When you bunch your plants together, make sure they are not in a south-facing window. Even if your plants require bright light, they are likely to dry out quickly if left in a bright spot, so for a couple of weeks moving them will not harm them & ensure they don’t get sunburnt.

  5. Add damp newspaper to the top of your large plants.

You might have guessed it by now, but most of these tips revolve around moisture retention, so this one is no different! For your more established plants, if you add some sheets of damp newspaper to the top of their soil before you leave & it will keep your soil full of moisture for longer.
