Now that we are fully in the growing season (usually starting around April), it is time to start fertilising your plants. Why do we do this? They supply essential nutrients, promote stronger growth in roots & foliage, plus keep your soil healthier for longer. There are many products on the market, but we wanted to explore some options you can use from waste products around your own home.
One: Coffee grains
This one is up for debate, with so many people promoting it, you will find just as many who find that it is not a viable option for your indoor plants. If you are up for an experiment, give it a go & let us know what you think!
πPros: Retains plant moisture, quick & easy to apply.
πCons: Directly applying coffee grounds to your soil can cause excessive moisture retention & maybe even fungal overgrowth.
Two: Banana skins
This is one we have used ourselves, and although we use it sporadically, it is a solution that we will definitely use again. All you have to do is add your banana skins to a container of water (we used a jar), leave it for a few days to a week to break down, and mix the water into your watering can, although there is no real need to dilute if you make a lot.
πPros: Easy process & adds potassium to your plants.
πCons: Smells quite bad when the skins break down (make sure you have a lid!)
Three: Pasta water
Water that pasta or rice has been cooked in is full of starch, which is often rich in vitamins & minerals, which is ideal for your indoor plants. It also means that less water is going to waste, which is great! Tip: Make sure it is cool before putting it on your plants.
πPros: Wasting less water, packed with vitamins & minerals.
πCons: You canβt salt your pasta water.
